Nothing brings more emotion to a parent than to see the youngster captured in a quality portrait. If you are either a child photographer now or desire to be, you will dsicover your share of several types of personalities of babies coming before your camera. You will dsicover “mild and wild” children and everything in between. We all understand that knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have in your “toolbox” prior to starting a photo session of a kid (at any age), the better off you are.
In this information, I wish to talk specifically about the initial stage of growth – the newborn stage. This is between 0 months and 3 months of age. Parents will call you literally from their hospital room soon after the birth of the youngster to secure a spot in your schedule so they don’t really miss this precious time. The pressure is on for you to give your clients the most effective you can. But as of this newborn stage, it’s hit or miss because it’s more unpredictable than any stage of growth. All things considered, the infant will control the session to a point.
Lets talk about some strategies we can use to minimize any possible problems. First, I think a photography studio should be clutter free. A client’s first impression when they walk in your studio may be the lasting impression. For instance picking inviting colors of paint for your walls. having 24×30 or larger portraits for your wall decor add impact for that wow experience newborn baby photography essex. You are telling your clients you specialize in wall portraits. Having soft instrumental music playing in the backdrop and scented candles creating that “calming” atmosphere and touch the senses. If you are dealing with first time parents, trust in me they are stressed as it is. A calm mom and dad is a pleased mom and dad.
The temperature of your camera room should be kept warmer than normal. A newborn cannot be cold or it will cry. Adding with the warm room will undoubtedly be worth it. Show the parents why you’re achieving this so they already feel you’re the infant expert. Get a hairdryer and wear it a low setting to make noise. This is called “white noise” and has been proven (by my own personal school of hard knocks research at my studio) to help keep a child calm. It works like a dream! Then based on which the infant is performing, proceed with the photography.
If the infant is sleeping, tell the mom to carefully remove the infant from the vehicle seat without waking the baby. The great thing about this stage is a child likes to accomplish two things – sleep and eat. A sleeping baby wants to “scrunch” up because that has been it’s position for 9 months in the mommy’s tummy. Simple capture what is natural to the baby. Utilizing an all white background and flooring with white bath rugs folded up so it makes a pile works well. This setup looks great in black and white photography. Lay the infant down on it’s tummy and “mold” the infant in the career you intend to capture. Position the baby’s hands underneath it’s head like a pillow. Do these poses without the baby’s diaper on. Yes…the baby may pee or poop but welcome to baby photography. It’s is sold with the job description.
After some variation of those nude poses, change to a richer background. Focus on the bond between mom, dad and baby. These can be very close intimate poses because showing lots of your body of the parents doesn’t do anything for the small tiny baby. It can get lost. I really do many different combinations of mommy, daddy and baby. Now let’s say the infant starts to obtain fussy. Stop the session. The infant is almost certainly hungry. Let the mom have time to feed the baby. If the mom is nursing, provide a personal area for her in your studio. This is yet another way to help relieve the mom’s stress. It’s always easier to be the infant expert with little such things as this than to you need to be a typical photographer. After the infant is fed and burped (very important) start the photography again.
Put the infant on it’s back in an antique baby scale with a diaper cover and attractive baby blankets. Antique baby scales can be found for a fair price on eBay. Just ensure they are the old fashioned type (it normally has a wicker basket on top) and ensure the scale actually works. If you are handy build a wide wood platform for it so it won’t tip over with a child in it. That will not be fun. Cover the wooden platform with material so it doesn’t show the wood. Take some photos looking down on the baby. Do this from a tiny step ladder. You’ve to work as quickly as you can to obtain as much from a child as of this stage as possible. Patience and expertise should come with time and practice.
